Critical Thinking and Ethics Essay According to Google (2015), the definition of critical thinking is, The objective analysis and evaluation of an issue in order to form a judgment. Basically, it means making an impartial, factual decision based on data and information received. Kirby, Goodpaster and Levine (1999), described creative thinking, organization, logical thinking, scientific thinking, persuasive thinking, and problem solving as all being part of critical thinking. Ellis and Toft (2015) states, Psychologist Benjamin Bloom described six kinds of thinking: Level 1: Remembering Level 2: Understanding Level 3: Applying Level 4: Analyzing Level 5: Evaluating Level 6: Creating By using all 6 components to critical thinking, we can find facts to substantiate our beliefs and decisions. They are all interconnected and will improve with practice.   After having taken the ELI Ethical Lens Inventory, the findings showed me that my preferred ethical lens is Reputation. This indicates that I oftentimes, listen to my intuition (sensibility) to determine what character traits and virtues best serve the community (equality). Per the ELI, my blind spot is unrealistic role expectations. It stated that because I rely so strongly on the virtues associated with various roles, I run the risk of developing unrealistic role expectations, forgetting that people are fallible regardless of their role. I disagree with this finding. People are human and by nature fallible beings. There are none perfect. My personal ethics are based on my Spiritual beliefs. I believe in God as the Creator of all. He is my higher authority and as such, the edicts and principles in the Bible, (scriptures inspired by God), are that which my personal ethics are based off of. I make decisions based on the Word of God. It helps by giving a clear depiction of right and wrong. Even knowing this however, does not mean that one is infallible. In the professional  environment, individuals are given an  organizations Code of Conduct whenever they become a part of it. This Code tells in detail, what exactly is required of a new member or employee. By accepting membership or employment with an   organization, you must agree to comply with the Code of Conduct or risk disciplinary action and or termination from the organization. Many friends have a Code that they live by. These are usually unwritten rules that are established as relationships form a closer bond. Breaking the Code might negatively affect the friendship or end it permanently, due to trust being broken. In conclusion, critical thinking is very complex, but we all seem to have the ability to use it on different levels. Continued utilization of the process of critical thinking will enable one with the ability to make sound decisions based on facts.

These marshes can be found near the Great South Bay and the Long Island Sound. The entire south shore of Long Island is considered to be a salt marsh important to the health of the marine life. Beginning in Jamaica Bay and extending to Montauk Point, Long Islands salt marches help remove toxic chemicals that are caused by pollution, thus making them a vital part of the eco-system. The Salt Marshes contain different types of grasses that grow out of the water and along the water's edge. This grass can be seen when the tide is low and is covered by water when the tide comes in. This grass helps hold the soil together by dispersing any wave energy and creating a breeding ground for many important marine animals. Also, the plants act as a natural filter, removing any chemicals that might be in the seawater. Some of the plants that are found in salt marshes are: Salt Marsh Grass or Spartina Alterniflora and Cord grass as well as reeds, sedges and golden rod. At low tide, nutrient-rich water flows from the marsh back into the sea, feeding the plankton upon which all other life depends. Peat, which is what the march is mostly made of, is very absorbent. In some areas, it limits coastal flooding by containing the water that comes in during a very high or storm-driven tide. Peat also acts as a filter, cleaning water by removing various compounds and either storing or breaking them down. The salt marsh is also an important breeding ground for many species of marine life. These animals use the marsh and its tall grasses for protection from predators. Some of the marine life is: clams, mussels, shrimp, oysters and small fishes such as killies and spearing. Some mammals use the salt marsh also. These animals include: mice, skunks and many, many species of water fowl. These animals use the marsh not only as a home, but as a place to find food as well. There are destructive forces at work against the salt marsh. While a slowly rising sea level has had some effect, the greatest destruction of salt marshes that has taken place is urban and suburban development. Stephen Crane established the naturalist style in literature, where concepts from real life are reconstructed in a fictional context to exemplify the plight of those trapped in the lower dregs of society. Naturalistic writers depict their characters as individuals oppressed by their environment; their acts are based upon their need to survive and the social order they fall into. The ideals of naturalism claim that human beings are not free, but that their actions are controlled and pre-determined mostly by the setting they inhabit and the natural or learned traits they possess. Keith Fudge, author of â€Å"Sisterhood Born from Seduction: Susanna Rowson’s Charlotte Temple, and Stephen Crane’s Maggie Johnson† states that â€Å"Maggie: A Girl of the Streets† has been recognized as â€Å"Naturalism’s first novel† (Fudge 43). The scientific philosophy comprised in naturalism originated from Charles Darwin’s theories of evolution that claim that only the â€Å"fittest† will survive. Throughout the novel, numerous degrees of survival and extinction are depicted; whether it is by Jimmie, Mary, Nell, or Maggie herself. Maggie: A Girl of the Streets is indeed a naturalistic tale of both physical and mental survival. Crane’s use of setting, tone, characters, and concepts of Darwinism illustrate this unequivocally. I will begin by fleshing out the concepts of Darwinism and Social Darwinism in the context of the novel and its relation to naturalism. Clarence Darrow spoke this famous line that exemplifies Social Darwinism’s philosophy, which is universally misattributed to Charles Darwin, â€Å"It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent, but rather the one most adaptable to change†.
